Did you ever have one of those days…..

where no matter what you did, nothing would go your way? That’s how tonight’s crafting adventure ended up! I was working on my last project for the #pawgustart event and every thing I started wasn’t to my liking. I started out trying to watercolor with distress inks, but couldn’t find my heat tool to heat emboss the image. So then I decided to paper piece the image. That turned out ok and I continued to work on the card. The next step was to use ink on an embossing folder to create trees and a blue (inked) background. When I added the paper pieced owls onto it, I did not like the way it looked.

I decided to scrap that project (after making two video parts for it, totaling over half an hour!) to work on making a flip card from a steel die. I have never really done one, so I thought I would give it a try. First attempt was poor at best! I tried to cut two pieces of patterned paper and glue one down to each side. The card would get stuck as you were flipping it. I gave up on that idea and decided to cut a new base out of white card stock, use the center pieces from my failed attempt and go from there.

I took a Heidi Swapp 12 x 12 heart stencil and used Barn Door distress ink to create the background. Next, I glued on the pieces that I cut out from my “failed” attempt at the flip card to cover the middle piece that flipped. I used the stamps from the Simon Says Stamp Circle Friends stamp set to create the background, bear and the sentiment. I added some clear gems for some sparkle to the card.

Learning to interpret a sketch

Posted on

These Sketch Sunday videos have been very fun for me. I enjoy looking at designs that other people came up with (and giving them credit in my video of course!!) and interpreting their design. I think I am getting better with each passing video and am learning what it means to interpret a sketch.
Since I am a Type A, I (sometimes) like to follow the rules and to me that means if there’s an oval shape on the card, my card must have an oval. If there are six circles on the sketch, my card will have six circles on it. But the sketch I used today helped me break free of that rule following aspect of my personality!! Below the sketch were several different card designer’s interpretations of the sketch. Some used squares instead of the ovals. Others used a tag in place of them. Some didn’t feature the exact layout of the bottom part of the card – no one said that it had to be the exact same – you just use the sketch as a guide.
And that’s what I did with this card! It turned out to be a lot less stressful because I didn’t have to look for ovals when I really wanted to use my wafer thin deckled edge dies. So I did! I also used some scarps from another project to make two of the elements.
The project turned out pretty well I think. I like it! It will be going up on Etsy soon (hopefully!). There won’t be a Sketch Sunday next week, but I should be back the following week. I have meetings for work and won’t be able to create, sadly.

Sketch Sunday # 2

Posted on

Hi everyone! Here is the second installment video in the Sketch Sunday series. I found the inspirational pin at http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/photo/1997385?&what=keywords&si=graduation.
It’s a one layer card, with washi tape, which is unusual for me. It’s also monochromatic, which is also a departure from my normal card making. It is simple and clean and easy to reproduce. I think it would be fun to do in a different colors. It would be a good gender neutral design to do in yellow, green or orange.
What are your thoughts? Do you make one layer cards? Or, like me, do you like to do layers of designer paper and embellishments?

Using Heidi Swapp stencils and distress inks to create a one layer cards

Posted on

Hi everyone! Here is a new video using Heidi Swapp stencils and distress inks to create two different card fronts.
The dimensions of the pre made card base are 4″ x 5 1/2″. This was a relatively easy card to create. I wanted to do a one layer card that would be easy to replicate because I want to start sending them to Operation Write Home. If you haven’t checked out their organization, please do. http://operationwritehome.org. It is an organization that sends the blank cards to the soldiers and they can use them to write home to their loved ones. It’s a great way to show support for those serving overseas so that they can write their family back home. I had all intentions of supporting this organization, but never followed through. I think that this is going to be one of my new goals.
Along with that, I am also going to be doing a 30 day crafting challenge. I will be posting videos of my progress over the next couple of weeks. If there are any projects you want to see done, let me know!
Thanks for watching. Feel free to leave comments or questions and subscribe!

Trying something new…..

I am starting something new and I am hoping that 1 – I can keep it up and 2 – it will help to better link my social media sites together. I’ve seen many successful bloggers that do this, so I am hoping on the bandwagon and I am hoping you all will help keep me on track.

I am going to write a post about any YouTube video that I make. It’s more beneficial for the card making design videos I do, but I want to try it with even the haul videos. Today’s video is a mix of my last blog post about the canvases and a shopping haul.

If you read my last post, you know that I made two canvases – one using distress ink and one using paint. While I do like the way the distress inked one came out, the ink doesn’t totally dry and it rubs off on your hands. Not a great thing to have happen lol. The second canvas was done in a dark blue paint. The first time I tried to write the quote I used paint. That didn’t turn out so great so I repainted the canvas and I took a silver marker and wrote the quote on it.

As for the haul, I think I found a lot of great products. First, if you haven’t checked out AC Moore’s new app, download it. You get a 55% off coupon and for today I believe there is also a 55% off coupon. (It’s either today or tomorrow I can’t remember). And, if you don’t know this either, you can use AC Moore coupons at Michael’s! I did yesterday and I got a pack of 2 rolls of ATG tape for $4.50! That’s the acid free one too. Pretty good deal!

I like to go down the aisles and check out the red clearance tagged items. I found two new punches this way. They are EK Success ones, which are good quality. Punches can be hard to store, but I do have some room in my craft closet for a couple more! : )

I also like to pay attention to the signs. Lots of stores are careless when they take down signs. Some aren’t taken down and you can get last week’s sale price if they forget. I’ve done that many of times. Also, if the products are in two locations (like the Heidi Swapp stuff I show in the video below), there may not always be a second sign. That’s frustrating as a consumer, but you have to keep your eyes peeled at all times!! You never know what you might find!

So, here’s the video:
