Sketch Sunday is BACK!

So, yes this post is a day late. But, I did make the video for it Saturday night (technically VERY early Sunday morning!). I finally found some time to create and let me tell you, it felt amazing to start making crafty things again! I made several cards this weekend and here’s the YouTube video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIqj8XPY568

First, I started out with 120 lb white card stock that I got from Michael’s. I decided to make it a side folding card. I then used 60 lb white card stock to cut out the largest My Favorite Things In and Out Diagonal Stitched Rectangle dies in my Cuttlebug. After it was cut out, I used the My Favorite Things Myriad Dots Mixable stencil with some Tumbled Glass and Salty Ocean distress ink with a round ink blending tool to create a dot pattern. I cut out a piece of white card stock a 1/8 of an inch larger than this piece and inked around the edges with the same two distress inks so that it would create a nice mat that would match the first layer perfectly.

The second largest die from the MFT In and Out Diagonal Stitched dies was used with one of the blue paper packs I got from the Michael’s Dollar section. The last thing I used the Cuttlebug for was to cut out three layers of letters from My Favorite Things. (I can’t remember the name of the letter die set that I used. It’s an all lowercase alphabet die set from them though). I used the Salty Ocean distress ink on some white card stock and cut out the first set of letters. The next two sets were done in plain white card stock and then I layered them together. This gave the card some dimension and took the place of the banner from the sketch.

The last element on the card was a circle I cut using the x-large Fiskar’s circle punch. I used the same white card stock that I used for all the layers (except the base). The sentiment was from the My Favorite Things Beautiful Baby stamp set and was inked up using Hero Arts Shadow Ink Cornflower in Mid Tone. I also inked around the edge of the circle in Salty Ocean distress ink.

I have WAY too much stuff!

Posted on

I’m organizing my craft room and it’s a mess. One of my friends from high school came over yesterday and looked at it and said, let me at it! If she had time I’d have let her, believe me!! We both decided that I have too much stuff, but I don’t want to part with anything.
So, I made a deal with myself to stop buying things (which I made awhile ago and have broken several times, because there have been some GREAT deals out there!!) AND to use things that I have lying around that I have never used.
I came up with three cards using at least one supply that I haven’t used in the past. I have three bins sitting in my craft room of clear stamps and most of them have gone unused. CRIME!!
The first card is a baby boy card using a Die-Namics wafter thin die from MyFavoriteThings. The second uses a paw print stencil to create a simple in design card, but I think simplicity works for this particular design. I used the Create a Friend Cricut cartridge on the next two cards to create a teacher and a ballerina card. For the last card I used a Heidi Swapp stamp that I never used before. The teacher card also used the Stitched journaling card from Lawn Fawn – another new product!
I think that I did a pretty good job of using a bunch of supplies that have been sitting around, untouched. What do you think? Is your room a mess like mine? Do you have unused supplies sitting around? And it doesn’t have to be paper craft related. All my other crafty friends – this applies to you as well!! I’d feel better knowing I’m not the only one………. : )

Custom Design Baby Boy Card

The other day, one of my friends asked me to make her a custom order. I made a card from her in the past and she loved it so I was so happy to be able to make another one for her. A friend of hers had a baby and she wanted a baby card. No problem!

The story is a mix of emotions because this family went through a terrible tragedy almost two years ago. And in one of those Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon type stories, I was introduced to this family but not only my friend from work, but a friend from high school as well. I actually donated cards to a fundraiser for Hayden’s Heart a little over a year ago since the story is such an amazing one. I can’t imagine what the family went through and for them to be able to turn the tragedy around and help other families facing a similar heart affliction is absolutely amazing. (You can read all about their story at  www.haydensheart.org or https://www.facebook.com/haydensheartfoundation)

I wanted to make an extra special card for them. So, my friend Marie and I talked about concepts and I told her I had something I thought would work! I used the Baby Steps Cricut cartridge to cut out the baby boy sleeping on the moon. I used the Rock Princess Cricut cartridge to cut out the phrase Little Angel with a halo. I showed her the cutout and she asked if it was possible to add a whisp of orange hair to the baby. I used the hair from another cut from Baby Steps and just glued it under his hat. The “Little Angel” phrase was cut out in orange as an homage to Hayden – kind of like he was looking down on his brother from heaven!

To create the background piece, I used some dark blue card stock for the night sky. I took my Martha Stewart stars punch that is square and allows you to punch the design at any place on the paper to create a star filled sky. Then I took a piece of white card stock and sprayed it with some clear shimmer mist so that when I placed it behind the starry background, the stars would sparkle! (You can see this better in person – it was tough to capture in the photograph.)

All the layers were glued together and placed on a 5 x 7 card base. The inside reads “Welcome Sweet Baby Boy” from a Simon Says Stamp exclusive stamp set. It was stamped in Hero Arts Shadow ink in Navy. (I didn’t get a picture of the inside before I sent it).

Here is what the card looks like:
