Sketch Sunday #32

I can’t believe that I have done 32 weeks of challenges! True, it wasn’t 32 straight weeks. I have never been that great at consistency, unfortunately. But lately I have been trying to be better at it. Sometimes life just gets in the way!

Anyway, this week’s sketch comes from My Favorite Things. I like doing their challenges because it doesn’t take long to look for the sketch and I get a chance to win an awesome prize! Here is the link to the sketch if you want to play along:http://www.cardchallenges.com/2015/08/wednesday-sketch-challenge-sketch-242.html

I made a video for Sketch Sunday showing how I put the card together. I also did a voice over in this one, which is something I haven’t done for awhile. Usually I don’t have much time to edit the video, so it goes up as is!

Sketch Sunday # 28

I have so many supplies that I haven’t used. I have been trying to be good and not buy more, but it’s so tough when companies come out with such adorable things every month. However, since I am unemployed (just for a week in between my old and new jobs!), I decided that I need to be extra good and not buy anything. Plus, with my sister in law’s baby shower coming up next week, I need to focus my time and energy on finishing the decorations for her shower.

So, instead of browsing the normal websites, I decided to browse my collection of stamps and find things that I haven’t used (or haven’t used that much). I used the usual sketch challenge this week and drew the sketch on a scratch piece of paper. I labeled parts of the sketch with what stamps I thought I would use. For the most part I think that I did use what I said I was going to use.

I started off with the background of the card. I bought the My Favorite Things Happy Birthday background stamp in one of the last hauls and I inked it up with MFT’s hybrid ink in Grape Jelly. It was the lightest of the three purple inks I chose for the card. The card base is 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ and the birthday stamped piece is an 1/8″ smaller. When I use background stamps like this, I ink up the stamp and then bring the paper to the stamp. This makes it easier to line up the stamp straight and it easier for me to apply even pressure so that I am sure that the whole piece got inked up.

I then took a piece of scrap card stock that was 3″ wide and stamped the cupcake tower image from the MFT Cupcake Cuties stamp set. I placed it on the happy birthday stamped layer to see what angle I needed the piece at, stamped and then cut the piece down. Then I placed the cupcake tower mask over the stamped image and inked up the MFT burlap background stamp in My Favorite Things Pure Plum hybrid ink. I took the piece, image side down, and placed it over the background stamp to give that piece some texture. When I removed the mask, there was a small white border around the image. It didn’t bother me, but if this will bother you, you can use masking fluid or rubber cement on the image, stamp the background over the image and then peel up the “mask”.

After I attached the smaller piece to the background, I rounded the top left corner and attached them both to the card base. I then stamped up the sentiment “Let’s Celebrate” in Hero Arts Shadow Ink Grape Juice. The finishing touch on the card came when I added the sequins that I made to match the three colors of ink I used to stamp the card in. I had taken some scrap card stock, swiped all three inks in a line and used my MFT sequins dies to create the embellishments.

This is where I stopped in the video. After I was done filming, I decided to take a bunch of markers and glitter pens I had in purple and colored in the cupcake tower. Since I wanted the card to remain monochromatic, I made sure to only use purple colors. I thought the card needed a little more so I also used some glossy accents on the sequins and the table cloth for the cupcake tower.

Sketch Sunday #24

So, for this week’s Sketch Sunday, I used the MFT Sketch Challenge. I know – shocking! (You can find the sketch here: http://www.cardchallenges.com/search/label/sketchchallenge). But, I did something different. There’s no card this week. I decorated the front of a plain, kraft bag!

I got the kraft bag from Michael’s. They come in packs of 13 I believe and you can use the coupons on them. I’m sure I used at least a 50% off one! This is the first bag I have decorated since Christmas. I wanted to make cute bags for my nieces’ Valentine’s gifts.

I started off typing in “Valentine’s” in the search bar of Design Space. (For those of you who don’t know, Design Space or DS is the website you use with the Cricut Explore to design what you want to cut). I found some conversation heart images that I wanted to use at first, but then I couldn’t get the papers to match. So, I decided to scratch that idea and use another image. There is an adorable image of a teddy bear dressed as Cupid in the Cricut Lite cartridge Teddy Bear Parade. So I typed in “Teddy bear” and found the image. I sized the bear to 5.52″  tall by 5.24″ wide. I then changed the colors of all of the pieces so that only a couple of sheets of card stock would be needed. His wings were changed to white and everything else was red, black, brown or tan!

In the sketch there was a banner, so I again type in “banner” in the search box and a bunch of images came up. I chose one and sized it to 5.06″ long and .89″ wide. I changed the layers to be white and red so that they would match the teddy bear. I also chose some patterned paper. The heart piece that was used as the largest layer was cut to 7 3/4″ x 9 3/4″ since the bag is approximately 8″ x 10″. The darker pink paper with white polka dots was cut to 5″ wide and 4″ tall. The lighter pink paper needed to be narrower but taller so I cut that one to 5″ tall and 4″ wide.

The last two pieces that I needed were the scallop at the bottom and the circle element. In a previous card I made, I had stamped a couple of the Chalkboard hearts from a Simon Says Stamp stamp set in Red Royal from Hero Arts Shadow Ink. The extras were sitting on my desk and I thought this would be a good project to use one on! I also found some Martha Stewart border stickers that could be cut in half to make the perfect scalloped edge.

Once I had all my elements, I took some Tea Dye distress ink and inked around the edges of the tan pieces of the bear. After that was done, I put all of the pieces of the bear together. I then took the patterned papers and glued them down in the proper place. The banner was adhered together with the Zig Two Way Glue pen and added to the two smaller pieces of patterned paper. Once that was on, I could place the teddy bear on the same papers and then the bag was finished! I think that it came together very nicely!

Sketch Sunday #20

I can’t believe that I have done 20 weeks of turning sketches into cards. I love it! I think that if I wasn’t doing this, I wouldn’t create anywhere near as often as I have been. I know I am still far away from where I would like to be for creating crafty things, but this is a start!

I needed a birthday card for my brother and I was looking through my supplies the other night. I saw some Simon Says Stamp birthday stamp and die sets that I haven’t used in awhile (probably because I have become so obsessed with My Favorite Things stamps and dies!!). There was a set of balloons, a Happy Birthday word die and some stamps. I also found the embellishments that came with my Lawn Fawn stitched journaling die set.

For the background, I used a 5×7 Darice embossing folder that looks like basket weaving. I inked it up with four colors of distress ink: Green – Shabby shutters and Peeled Paint and Blue – Faded Jeans and Salty Ocean. I really like the way these colors look together. I used those same four colors to ink up the stars from the journaling dies and the “Happy Birthday” from the SSS die.

SInce I wanted to use the large balloon and a lot of the background I inked up, I opted for a 5 x 7 card instead of the traditional 4 x 5 1/2 ones I usually do. I glued the pieces together with Zig Two Way Glue Pen and my ATG. Once everything was glued together, I adhered the card front to the card base.

Project Update

So, I decided to not really do New Year’s Resolutions because every time I do, I break them. However, I am trying to do Life Resolutions – long term changes. I am starting off with ones that have to do with my business and then working on some personal ones. The first one I decided to work on is my organization.

First of all, if you’ve ever seen my house, you will realize that I am the most unorganized organized person. Contradictions, I know. I say this because even though there are things all over my house, I know where things are. It’s my own brand of organization. That is until I try to organize and I realize that I can’t find anything because it’s not where it belongs. And this is because I have no true home for anything.

Which is why organization is number one on my list. I thought that to keep me on track with what I want to do for my business, I better come up with a way to remember everything. I often have all these great ideas about projects I want to do or videos and/or blog posts I want to complete and then once I actually get the time to do them, I forget what that great idea was! Or, even worse, I remember and then I have no time because I haven’t scheduled my time. Great on the idea part, terrible on the execution. That should be my tagline!!

To rectify this, I decided that I would make a cork board calendar and keep all of my ideas on it. If there’s a product I want to use or a sketch I want to create a project from, I can just add it to the board! Genius. So off to Michael’s I went. I picked up two packages of 12×12 cork board tiles to create the calendar. I knew that I had a glue gun, scrapbook paper and ribbon at home so the only other thing I needed were thumb tacks. I didn’t see any I loved, so I just grabbed some silver ones because I figured I could dress them up with jewels or ribbon or something cute.

Once I got home, I started creating the project. I opened the first pack and started to hot glue to pieces together. BAD idea. The hot glue caused gaps in the pieces and then I ripped one trying to take the pieces apart. This is why I was glad that they were Buy One Get One Half off because I already had a second pack to open and try a new approach.

For the second try, I decided to go with scrapbook paper. I found some sheets of what I think are American Craft glitter paper that I got from Joann’s. (Honestly, I buy TOO much paper so I can’t keep track of all the brands I buy at different places. I know – woe is me!! LOL) It is a little larger than 12×12, so I cut the paper down a little and used some ATG to glue it to the cork board. I then took some American Crafts glitter ribbon and make a cross to adhere all four pieces together. I then proceeded to get my ruler out and figure out how big each rectangle needed to be. I figured I would need five weeks and I needed eight rows at the top (one for each day of the week and the first one for the month name – maybe?)

I took the glitter ribbon and started to cut the pieces I would need to make the columns and rows, but I soon discovered that I didn’t have enough glitter ribbon. Back to the craft room to see what else I could find. There I found some rolls of Recollections glitter tape in black. I cut them into the same length pieces as the glitter ribbon and assembled my chart! I really was liking the way that it turned out – nice and glittery!!

For the days of the week, I used My Favorite Things dies that are the days of the week. I originally bought them because we had wanted to do a pool for when my sister was going to have the twins, but after I ordered them she ended up in the hospital with contractions and almost didn’t make it to her own baby shower, so we decided against that. The dies sat in a bin, unused, until now! I took some Die Cuts With a View Shimmer Stack paper in purple and cut the days of the week out. To adhere the days, I used a Zig Two Way Glue pen. They stuck, but it took awhile for them to adhere. Glitter paper is tricky to get things to adhere to. I may need to revisit this adhesive method at some point, but for right now, the days are stuck where they belong!

The last thing I needed to do was to figure out what I was going to use to write my ideas for each day on. Since the spaces are roughly 3 x 4, I thought that I could use my journaling card die from Lawn Fawn. I cut one out and it fit perfectly!! Problem solved.

Today, I decided where to hang it. For right now it is hanging above my Cricut Expression that’s on one part of my L shaped desk. I can add or take down the papers with different projects on them so that I always know what’s going on for the month. There will always be something on Sundays, as I am starting up my Sketch Sunday series again tomorrow. Here is a picture of what it looks like in my room:

GetAttachment-2.aspx

There are two more projects I am working on. One is a grateful journal. I am using the same 3×4 Lawn Fawn journaling die to cut out those rectangles and using a combination of stamps, dies and handwriting to capture one thing from each day that I am grateful for. I think I am going to put together either a journal or a mini album at the end of the month with all of the cutouts so that at the end of the year, I can see what fantastic things happened each day!

The last project I am working on is a visual way to see how much weight I need to lose versus how much I’ve lost. I saw something on Pinterest and wanted to recreate it. You take two jars and put something in one that represents how much weight you want to lose and once you lose a pound, you put one rock or stone or whatever you chose into the pounds lost jar. It will be so good to see the first jar empty and the second jar fill up. I have a hard time staying motivated, so I am hoping this helps.

In the near future, I want to put together a bill book so that I can keep track of all of my household bills in one place. I have a bad habit of forgetting to pay a bill because I throw all my mail into a pile. BAD idea and a terrible thing for your credit. UGH! I hate admitting and writing that, but for 2015 I am going to get better!!

Thanks for stopping by. To see a video of the first and second project, head over to my YouTube channel where I posted this video:

Sketch Sunday #17

Hi everyone! It’s Sunday again. Boo. Sadly, it means another week of work. Luckily, my work week only consists of two day this week. Even so, I am dreading this Sunday night. The hours of the day are going too quickly and I still have a To Do List a mile long. And somehow, with each thing that gets checked off, at least one more thing replaces it. Ugh.

However, one of the (only) good things about Sunday is that it’s the day I get to do my Sketch Sunday videos. I really look forward to making them! As I have the past couple of Sketch Sundays, I used the My Favorite Things Sketch for my card. Their blog info is http://www.mftstamps.com/blog/category/wednesday-stamp-club/ if you want to go over and check out the sketch!

Today happens to be my Sister in Law’s birthday. I know that I should have made her card before now, but with the craft shows, work and just trying to get things done around the house, there isn’t much time left to do things ahead of time. So, I decided to use this week’s sketch to make her card. Not a bad idea – two birds with one stone, right?and

I found the stamp set from My Favorite Thing that I wanted to use for her card. She loves cats so I decided to use the stamp set Pure Innocence Kitty Costume. First, I took a Nestabilities die and cut the shape from 65 lb white card stock from Recollections. I then stamped the main image in Momento Tuxedo black ink (because I don’t have the MFT black ink – yet! It’s on order!!!) I die cut a larger die from the same collection in a light blue paper, also from Recollections. I took a sponge dauber and some Distress ink in Broken China and inked around the edges of the two shapes I cut out, as well as the background and the patterned paper.

I colored in the girl dressed as a cat using Promarkers, distress markers and Studio G markers. I stamped the girl again on patterned paper and then cut her dress out so that I could paper piece it to the image on the cut out shape. I did this by using a Zig Two Way Glue pen.

I took a piece of 110 lb white card stock and cut it down to 7″ x 10″ and folded it in half to make a 5″ x 7″ card base. I cut the blue piece of card stock for the background to an 1/8″ smaller than the card base. The patterned paper that I used is from the American Crafts Hip Hip Hooray paper pad. I used that as inspiration for the color pallet for the rest of the card. Her dress came from the paper pad Oh Darling by Crate Paper. The last pieces of card stock that I used were some scraps that I had lying around. They all come from Michael’s Recollections line – all open stock paper.

I used several My Favorite Things dies. The first is the letters dies and the second is the party hat accompanying pieces. The latter was not in the YouTube video – it was added after the video was done because I looked at the card and it seemed like it still needed a “little something”. I also used some clear glitter glue on top of the letters to give it a little sparkle.

Here’s what the card looks like all finished:
