Sketch Sunday #36

So, I have missed a couple of posts lately. Whoops! Life here has been crazy. I put my house up for sale before the summer and spent the entire summer (and part of fall) cleaning for open houses and showings. Needless to say, my crafting was put on hold. My craft supplies were packed up in so many boxes that they probably outnumbered boxes in all other rooms (combined)!

I moved into my new house at the end of October and started to set up my craft room. Unfortunately, it was the last room that needed to be worked out, but the one I wanted to the most! It’s almost complete – I will be posting a room tour video soon! The last pieces should be arriving at my house tomorrow, if the snow storm hasn’t delayed their delivery.

I have started to get back into a crafting routine, which includes Sketch Sunday. I even was able to participate in this month’s hashtag event! (You can see the videos over at my YouTube channel – link listed below).

For this week’s sketch Sunday, I used the sketch from MFT Weekly Sketch Challenge: http://www.cardchallenges.com/search/label/sketchchallenge

I started with a pre-made kraft card stock card base that measures 8″ x 5 1/2″. I used my Martha Stewart bone folder to score the card at 4″ and make the creases more crisp. This made the card 4″ x 5 1/2″.

The front of the card was made by using a piece of green Recollections card stock that was cut 1/8″ smaller than the card base. I then cut a piece of white Recollections card stock 1/8″ smaller than the green mat. I took the white piece of card stock and placed it in the MISTI. Placing the My Favorite Things cling stamp Birthday Background in the MISTI, I inked it up with My Favorite Things Gumdrop Green and stamped it on the white card stock piece. Then, I used washi tape to secure the white piece to the Heidi Swapp stencil. In the open areas of the stencil, I used Tim Holtz Mermaid Lagoon distress ink and a mini ink blending tool to create the two blue bands over the words.

I took the same green Recollections card stock and ran it through the Cuttlebug with the Simon Says Stamp die that says “Brothers”. I did this four times and then I took all four pieces and secured them together with my Zig Two Way glue pen. After they were stuck together, I used my CutterBee scissors to cut off the “s” in Brothers. Using the same glue, I attached the word “Brother” to the right side of the top blue band.

For the inside sentiment, I used another My Favorite Things stamp set called Delicious Birthday. The white layer is 3 1/4″ x 3 3/4″ and the green layer is 1/8″ larger than the white layer. The sentiment I chose was “It’s Your Day Get Your Cake On”. I inked it up in the same Gumdrop Green My Favorite Things hybrid ink that I used for the background stamp on the front of the card. I also stamped the set of five candles that comes with the set in the bottom right corner.

That is the card for this week. Here is the link to the video:https://youtu.be/ivxEvKVNeqA

Did you ever have one of those days…..

where no matter what you did, nothing would go your way? That’s how tonight’s crafting adventure ended up! I was working on my last project for the #pawgustart event and every thing I started wasn’t to my liking. I started out trying to watercolor with distress inks, but couldn’t find my heat tool to heat emboss the image. So then I decided to paper piece the image. That turned out ok and I continued to work on the card. The next step was to use ink on an embossing folder to create trees and a blue (inked) background. When I added the paper pieced owls onto it, I did not like the way it looked.

I decided to scrap that project (after making two video parts for it, totaling over half an hour!) to work on making a flip card from a steel die. I have never really done one, so I thought I would give it a try. First attempt was poor at best! I tried to cut two pieces of patterned paper and glue one down to each side. The card would get stuck as you were flipping it. I gave up on that idea and decided to cut a new base out of white card stock, use the center pieces from my failed attempt and go from there.

I took a Heidi Swapp 12 x 12 heart stencil and used Barn Door distress ink to create the background. Next, I glued on the pieces that I cut out from my “failed” attempt at the flip card to cover the middle piece that flipped. I used the stamps from the Simon Says Stamp Circle Friends stamp set to create the background, bear and the sentiment. I added some clear gems for some sparkle to the card.

Sketch Sunday #31

I don’t have the best track record at this blogging thing. I will try to get better. I have been making YouTube videos, though! A lot is going on here. My new house is almost done, but this one hasn’t sold. (No pressure!) My twin nieces’ turned one yesterday, which is a huge deal. (They were born 3 months early and only weighed a little over 2 lbs each). We had a huge party to celebrate them turning one and all the milestone they have hit. It’s been a long road, but there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. Of course I went overboard with decorations. Not just me – my sister and I did all the decorations. Okay, and so if Andy reads this (her husband, which I doubt he will), I will give him some credit. He did help put the toothpick holders together! HA. (I will do a separate post and show pics of everything we created!)

Anyway, I did another Sketch Sunday this week. The sketch is a My Favorite Things Sketch located here: http://www.cardchallenges.com/2015/08/wednesday-sketch-challenge-sketch-241.html?m=1

Sketch Sunday #25

So this week’s Sketch Sunday has a “wild” theme! I bought the stamp and die set from My Favorite Things because of the lion in it awhile ago, but never used it. I originally bought it because in one of the pictures of one of my nieces in the NICU she looked like she was roaring so my sister called her a lion. I thought the lion stamp would be cute when I do her scrapbook. I know, I know – I bought a whole stamp set AND the matching dies for one stamp and die?? To prove I wasn’t crazy, I decided to use them in tonight’s Sketch Sunday.

The inspiration for the card came from the Card Challenge Sketch over at My Favorite Things. (Sketch 214) http://www.cardchallenges.com/search/label/sketchchallenge. I wanted to also use the background stamp that I bought but never used either. So, I took the zebra stamp from Wild Things, the zebra die from Wild Things and the Zebra Background stamp out of my stamp holders and started to formulate a design from the sketch.

I first cut the card base down to 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ from white card stock and then a black piece of card stock to 4″ x 5 1/4″. I also cut a smaller piece of white card stock an 1/8″ of an inch smaller than the black card stock layer. I inked up the background stamp with some My Favorite Things Black Licorice Hybrid ink and stamped it on the smallest white card stock layer. Next, I took one of my Spellbinders circle dies and put about 3/4 of the circle on the stamped card stock and ran it though my Cuttlebug to create a cut out on the right side. This would allow the black card stock to show through.

I adhered the stamped piece to the black layer and then those layers to the card base. Using the Hero Arts Shadow Ink in Red Royal, I stamped the sentiment “Wild About You” onto a small scrap of white card stock, which measures 3/4″ x 2 3/4″. I glued the sentiment piece down to the card base and then went to work on the focal image.

Since I had already die cut the wafer thin zebra die from white card stock, I used the MFT black licorice ink to ink up the zebra stamp and stamp the image onto the cut out. I then used pop dots on the back of the image and attached it to the card base so that it was raised above the rest of the card layers. Finally, I placed a thin layer of glossy accents on top of the zebra for some added interest.

The final step of the card was to add some bling underneath the sentiment. I used Bling It red pearls. They are on a row all together, so I cut off three and then separated them so I could space them out better than I did on the original in the video.

This card would be cute for Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, a birthday – really almost any occasion! Here is the final version of the card:GetAttachment-4.aspx

Sketch Sunday #24

So, for this week’s Sketch Sunday, I used the MFT Sketch Challenge. I know – shocking! (You can find the sketch here: http://www.cardchallenges.com/search/label/sketchchallenge). But, I did something different. There’s no card this week. I decorated the front of a plain, kraft bag!

I got the kraft bag from Michael’s. They come in packs of 13 I believe and you can use the coupons on them. I’m sure I used at least a 50% off one! This is the first bag I have decorated since Christmas. I wanted to make cute bags for my nieces’ Valentine’s gifts.

I started off typing in “Valentine’s” in the search bar of Design Space. (For those of you who don’t know, Design Space or DS is the website you use with the Cricut Explore to design what you want to cut). I found some conversation heart images that I wanted to use at first, but then I couldn’t get the papers to match. So, I decided to scratch that idea and use another image. There is an adorable image of a teddy bear dressed as Cupid in the Cricut Lite cartridge Teddy Bear Parade. So I typed in “Teddy bear” and found the image. I sized the bear to 5.52″  tall by 5.24″ wide. I then changed the colors of all of the pieces so that only a couple of sheets of card stock would be needed. His wings were changed to white and everything else was red, black, brown or tan!

In the sketch there was a banner, so I again type in “banner” in the search box and a bunch of images came up. I chose one and sized it to 5.06″ long and .89″ wide. I changed the layers to be white and red so that they would match the teddy bear. I also chose some patterned paper. The heart piece that was used as the largest layer was cut to 7 3/4″ x 9 3/4″ since the bag is approximately 8″ x 10″. The darker pink paper with white polka dots was cut to 5″ wide and 4″ tall. The lighter pink paper needed to be narrower but taller so I cut that one to 5″ tall and 4″ wide.

The last two pieces that I needed were the scallop at the bottom and the circle element. In a previous card I made, I had stamped a couple of the Chalkboard hearts from a Simon Says Stamp stamp set in Red Royal from Hero Arts Shadow Ink. The extras were sitting on my desk and I thought this would be a good project to use one on! I also found some Martha Stewart border stickers that could be cut in half to make the perfect scalloped edge.

Once I had all my elements, I took some Tea Dye distress ink and inked around the edges of the tan pieces of the bear. After that was done, I put all of the pieces of the bear together. I then took the patterned papers and glued them down in the proper place. The banner was adhered together with the Zig Two Way Glue pen and added to the two smaller pieces of patterned paper. Once that was on, I could place the teddy bear on the same papers and then the bag was finished! I think that it came together very nicely!

Sketch Sunday 23

For this week’s Sketch Sunday, I went with a sketch from the My Favorite Things’ sketch challenge (which can be found here – http://www.cardchallenges.com/search/label/sketchchallenge). Since I organized my stamps (but didn’t bring them upstairs to the craft room yet!), I went though them as I sat and watched tv tonight. I found a couple of sets that hadn’t ever been used or had only been used once. I then looked at the sketch and realized that I needed some paper for the background.

For the 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ white card base, I used some white Recollections 65 lb card stock. I knew I wanted to use the cassette tape die from MFT that has been in my stash for so long, unused! I cut the bottom layer out of black card stock from Recollections and the label from the same white as the base. I also stamped the label from the MFT Journal It Playlist in Hero Arts Shadow Ink in Pale Tomato.

For the background of the card, I thought I wanted something with hearts because I wanted to create a love/Valentine’s day card. I was looking for some vellum that was leftover from the wedding invitations that I did for my friend Alicia and came across something under my desk that changed the theme of the card. When I saw that the Crate Paper Party Day paper had music notes with “Happy Birthday”, I changed focus. I now needed a new sentiment, so I dug through my stamp sets. I couldn’t find any ready made sentiments that I liked, so I made my own!

First, I saw the word “EPIC” in the Journal It Playlist stamp set from My Favorite Things and decided I wanted it to say “Wishing You an epic birthday”. Next I found the “Wishing You” from the MFT Merry Messages stamp set and the “Birthday” from the MFT Delicious Birthday stamp set. The “an” was more difficult to get, but I finally found the sentiment “You Are an” in the MFT Be Original set. Lastly, I stamped these all in Hero Arts Shadow Ink in Pale Tomato on some white Recollections card stock. I then mounted that on some of the same Crate Paper that I used for the front of the card.

To finish off the front of the card I used the MFT Jumbo Squiggle Border die with some vellum to make the scallop design that is at the bottom of the sketch. I also cut a piece of vellum that was a little bit smaller than the cassette tape die cut so that there was a backing to the tape.

Here is what the card looks like:photo-49image-2

Sketch Sunday #21

I finally got a Sketch Sunday done on a Sunday – go me! HAHA. This week the sketch inspiration came from the MFT Card Challenge. I usually use that because I love their stamps and their sketches – plus I use the card as my entry to their challenge every week. (Or as close to every week as I can get!!)

This week’s sketch can be found here: http://www.cardchallenges.com/search/label/sketchchallenge

For my card I used the Lawn Fawn Journaling die to cut out some Canson XL 140 lb watercolor paper. I used girl from the Pure Innocence Serenity stamp set and stamped her with some Versamark ink. I heat set it with some Ebony embossing powder from Recollections. I stamped the sentiment from the MFT You Make the Day stamp set and heat set it with the same Ebony embossing powder.

I used the same journaling die to cut out the middle of a piece of Crate Paper designer paper so that I could inlay the watercolor piece into it. I also die cut a stitched circle and a star from Sizzix and Lifestyle crafts. Then I assembled the card on a 4″ x 5 1/2″ card base.
