Learning to interpret a sketch

Posted on

These Sketch Sunday videos have been very fun for me. I enjoy looking at designs that other people came up with (and giving them credit in my video of course!!) and interpreting their design. I think I am getting better with each passing video and am learning what it means to interpret a sketch.
Since I am a Type A, I (sometimes) like to follow the rules and to me that means if there’s an oval shape on the card, my card must have an oval. If there are six circles on the sketch, my card will have six circles on it. But the sketch I used today helped me break free of that rule following aspect of my personality!! Below the sketch were several different card designer’s interpretations of the sketch. Some used squares instead of the ovals. Others used a tag in place of them. Some didn’t feature the exact layout of the bottom part of the card – no one said that it had to be the exact same – you just use the sketch as a guide.
And that’s what I did with this card! It turned out to be a lot less stressful because I didn’t have to look for ovals when I really wanted to use my wafer thin deckled edge dies. So I did! I also used some scarps from another project to make two of the elements.
The project turned out pretty well I think. I like it! It will be going up on Etsy soon (hopefully!). There won’t be a Sketch Sunday next week, but I should be back the following week. I have meetings for work and won’t be able to create, sadly.

I have WAY too much stuff!

Posted on

I’m organizing my craft room and it’s a mess. One of my friends from high school came over yesterday and looked at it and said, let me at it! If she had time I’d have let her, believe me!! We both decided that I have too much stuff, but I don’t want to part with anything.
So, I made a deal with myself to stop buying things (which I made awhile ago and have broken several times, because there have been some GREAT deals out there!!) AND to use things that I have lying around that I have never used.
I came up with three cards using at least one supply that I haven’t used in the past. I have three bins sitting in my craft room of clear stamps and most of them have gone unused. CRIME!!
The first card is a baby boy card using a Die-Namics wafter thin die from MyFavoriteThings. The second uses a paw print stencil to create a simple in design card, but I think simplicity works for this particular design. I used the Create a Friend Cricut cartridge on the next two cards to create a teacher and a ballerina card. For the last card I used a Heidi Swapp stamp that I never used before. The teacher card also used the Stitched journaling card from Lawn Fawn – another new product!
I think that I did a pretty good job of using a bunch of supplies that have been sitting around, untouched. What do you think? Is your room a mess like mine? Do you have unused supplies sitting around? And it doesn’t have to be paper craft related. All my other crafty friends – this applies to you as well!! I’d feel better knowing I’m not the only one………. : )

Sketch Sunday # 2

Posted on

Hi everyone! Here is the second installment video in the Sketch Sunday series. I found the inspirational pin at http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/photo/1997385?&what=keywords&si=graduation.
It’s a one layer card, with washi tape, which is unusual for me. It’s also monochromatic, which is also a departure from my normal card making. It is simple and clean and easy to reproduce. I think it would be fun to do in a different colors. It would be a good gender neutral design to do in yellow, green or orange.
What are your thoughts? Do you make one layer cards? Or, like me, do you like to do layers of designer paper and embellishments?

Special Projects

Posted on

I have been busy doing some custom orders for some special people lately. I made a gender reveal banner, which you can see on my Facebook page. I made all the toothpicks with whales for the fruit and cupcakes. I also made the large whales for the front of the gender reveal boxes that were filled with balloons.
The next custom order was for tags for cake pops. They were being used as “Thank Yous” for a bridal shower. The customer wanted the bride and grooms initials on it. The bridesmaid dresses are grey and the flowers are orange, so I used those two colors to create the tags. She put orange ribbon on the tags.
The last custom order that I worked on was an It Works banner for a friend of mine who is starting her own business. The colors of It Works are a lime green, black and white, so I did the banner in those colors. I also used the same color green and some black ribbon to tie the banner together.
Here’s the video with more detail.

Craft room Redo

Posted on

Hi everyone! This hopefully will explain why I wasn’t able to do a Sketch Sunday video and blog post. But I am trying to do the 30 day challenge, I just picked a terrible time to start it (or maybe it was a terrible time to start organizing my craft room….hmmm). Anyway, here is a look at the W.I.P. (Work In Progress) of the room. Let me know what you think and also if you have any organizational tips. You can leave links to your blogs, FB, Youtube videos showing organizational tips. What have you done to organize your creative space? I’d love to see pictures!

Craft Room Redo

Posted on

There was no Sunday Sketch this week because I’ve been tearing apart my craft room. And by tearing apart, I mean putting things in boxes and taking them out of the room to reorganize. I had to work on a card for my best friend’s husband and I had my niece (their daughter) over to “help”. At one point she said to me, are you going to organize this stuff? Because if you aren’t, I will! (She’s 7!) I would have been more than happy to let her, but then I wouldn’t know where anything was! HA.

To help me organize my stamps (the wood mounted ones at least), I got two Martha Stewart cubbies that fit nicely on my desk. A couple of weeks ago, I cleared out some space and took the chest of drawers out of the closet area and put it next to my desk. On top of that, I placed a larger set of Martha Stewart cubbies. (This one is a six holed cubby versus the two smaller, fifteen holed cubbies). I organized my wood mounted stamps by category (Christmas, birthday, thank you, etc) and placed each category in a cubby. Most of them needed to lay down or be on their side, so for me to know what was in each cubby, I stood up one of the larger stamps at the opening.

I would say that 95% of my stamps are accounted for at this time. I am sure that I have some on my desk (probably some under it as well!) and some downstairs. But, now I have a system for putting them away. If only I knew what to do with my abundance of clear stamps…….sigh.

I still have a long way to go before the craft room is total organized. The next big step is finding a home for those clear stamps – one that makes sense and I can find what I am looking for. It’s difficult because I have tiny stamp sets and huge ones. If anyone has any ideas, I can sure use some!!

You can check out a picture of the progress on my Facebook page. (Link below) Again, it may not look like much, but it really IS progress. I swear! Oh – and there are two pics of my cats on there. They are liking the craft room update as well!

National Scrapbooking Day

Posted on

Happy National Scrapbooking Day everyone! I didn’t even know that there was such a day until about three years ago when I saw someone post about it on Facebook. It’s a day to sit back and scrapbooking or craft all day. Not that I need an excuse to do that, but it’s nice to have a day. There’s a day for anything you can think of practically!!

My plan for today is to work on the things for my sister’s gender reveal party tomorrow. She wasn’t supposed to find out until the end of the month, but the tech could tell at her last appointment (she’s only 13 weeks) and she wrote it down. It’s killing my sister (and her husband I’m sure) to have that envelope sitting there, knowing that it contains the gender of their babies. So, she decided to do the party a lot earlier than intended. Hence, why I am spending NSC making things for her party tomorrow!

She went with a What Whale They Be? theme, so I am making all whale items. I’m making things that I have never made before – flying by the seat of my pants! I hope that it all comes out good. I get nervous when I am making things for people I know, especially when they have a very specific idea in their minds of what they want. I hope it lives up to their standards!

What are your plans for NSD? Let me know what you are up to today!
